MA Interior Architecture and Design digital portfolio advice

Your digital portfolio is a key part of your application to study MA Interior Architecture and Design at NTU. Find out how to best prepare your portfolio and what we're looking for when we judge your work ahead of providing an offer.

What you need to know before preparing your portfolio

When it comes to preparing your digital portfolio, we know that there's a lot to think about — from how to demonstrate your creative identity, to how much you should show, to what you should even include in the first place.

We understand that your work is unique to you as an individual and a designer, but we've pulled together some useful advice to help give you a better understanding of what you should consider when applying, and what we're looking for in your submission.

For the academic team to consider your application you are required to submit a short and considered PDF document which showcases your creativity and skills.

The portfolio can include work in all kinds of media, such as images, photographs, drawings and more.

As general guidance, you should aim to include:

  • Evidence of your ability to think conceptually and about wider ideas and topics.
  • Some demonstration of your working process, not just the finished pieces!
  • Examples of work which show architectural and technological skills, or work which demonstrates your ability to design spatially in reference to your own field.
  • Demonstrations of your abilities with sketching and model making.
  • Anything else which you think shows off your relevant skills as a person and a designer!

You should also include dates and descriptions for all of the projects to let us know what they are about, including the reasoning behind why they were undertaken.

Please keep this concise however, as we do aim to review portfolios in respect to overall communication skills too.

The details of your application form and portfolio will be carefully considered when assessing your suitability for the course.

Our academic team will be looking for evidence of your creativity, innovation, intellectual engagement, technical skills and professionalism.

As part of this, we encourage that the portfolio takes a stance of quality over quantity. You show aim to choose a few examples of projects and skills.

The design and clarity of the portfolio itself will also be reviewed as part of the application, and so additional effort should be placed into the layout and composition of the document alongside the work included within it.

Submitting your portfolio

Our tips for how best to submit a digital portfolio of your work.

Make sure your work is in the correct format and adheres to our guidelines is important, as it may otherwise not make it through to the academic team.

Your portfolio should:

  • The portfolio must be submitted as a PDF document.
  • There should be no more than 20 pages.
  • The portfolio must be submitted as a single, unzipped file not exceeding 20 megabytes (mb).
  • Please note that links to download files will not be accepted.

Further guidance on how to submit your digital portfolio will be sent via email during your application process.

You may wish to include an optional video in support of your portfolio document. This is encouraged as a way of presenting the portfolio to us and talking through anything which you may wish to highlight further. It gives an opportunity for us to hear from you and for you showcase a bit of your personality too.

As a general rule, you should bear in mind:

  • The video should be no longer than 5 minutes.
  • You may wish to narrate over the portfolio on screen, as a presentation.

You can also create an edited video of your work to showcase your portfolio differently.
